UV lash glue: what lash artists should know before switching

Written by Liliana Prodan, an internationally trained and multi-certified lash technician with hands-on experience using UV/LED lash systems in professional lash services.

Thinking about switching to UV? Read this first.

A simple guide from one lash tech to another.

Have you ever found yourself asking:

  • Is the UV/LED system just another trend?
  • Is it safe?
  • Why are so many lash artists switching?

Trust me, I asked myself those exact same questions.

I was curious and a little skeptical, but more than anything, I was looking for another way.

After working with the UV/LED system for almost two years, testing different devices and adhesives, investing in education and learning through my own experience, I finally feel confident enough to share what I’ve learned and explain this system in simple words.

This isn’t a scientific paper. And it certainly isn’t a replacement for a training course.

Let’s simply call it what it is: an introduction.

A quick clarification before we start:

You may hear people call this “UV lash extensions”, but technically the extensions are not UV.

The system uses a UV/LED lamp and a compatible UV lash adhesive to cure the bond during application.

The lashes are still eyelash extensions. What changes is the way the adhesive cures.

What is the UV/LED system?

The easiest way to describe it is this:

It’s simply a different way of curing lash adhesive.

With a normal adhesive, curing happens through moisture in the air and the natural lash.

The UV/LED system works differently.

It relies on two essential parts:

  • a UV/LED device that produces UV light
  • a compatible UV adhesive

Think of them as a team: the device emits a specific wavelength of UV light, and the adhesive is designed to respond to that wavelength of light.

That’s why it’s called a system.

Neither the lamp nor the adhesive is designed to work on its own, they’re designed to work together.

If you are already familiar with traditional adhesives but want a deeper understanding of how lash glue behaves, you may also find our lash glue guide helpful.

So what makes UV adhesive different?

You may have noticed that I specifically mentioned a compatible UV adhesive. That wasn’t by accident.

Not every lash adhesive can be used with a UV/LED device.

UV adhesives contain special ingredients called photo initiators. These ingredients are designed to respond to a specific wavelength of UV light. Once they’re activated, they trigger the curing process.

That’s why a regular lash adhesive doesn’t suddenly become a UV adhesive just because you shine a UV/LED device on it.

It’s also worth mentioning that most UV adhesives are still based on cyanoacrylate, just like traditional lash adhesives. It’s the addition of photo initiators that changes the way the adhesive cures.

In simple terms:

A UV/LED lash system gives the artist more control over when the adhesive cures, but it still needs the correct lamp, correct adhesive, correct distance, correct technique and proper training.

Does that mean humidity and room temperature no longer matter?

Not exactly. One of the biggest surprises for me after switching to the UV/LED system was realising that environmental conditions didn’t disappear, they simply played a different role.

The UV/LED device controls when the adhesive cures. But your working environment can still influence how the glue behaves while you’re working.

Temperature can still affect the glue drop, its consistency, how it picks up and, ultimately, how it feels to work with.

So yes, the UV/LED system gives you much more control over the curing process, but good working conditions still matter.

If retention is something you struggle with in general, this guide on why lash extensions don’t last explains more about the different factors that can affect results.

UV adhesive vs regular adhesive

Before we move on, here’s a simple comparison that puts everything we’ve talked about side by side.

Regular adhesive UV adhesive
Cures through moisture. Cures when activated by the correct wavelength of UV light.
Doesn’t contain photoinitiators. Contains photoinitiators.
Humidity influences when curing starts. You decide when curing starts.
More dependent on environmental conditions during curing. Less dependent on environmental conditions during curing.
Typically can contain a higher percentage of cyanoacrylate. Can be formulated with a lower amount of cyanoacrylate.

Why is the UV/LED system so interesting for lash technicians?

Every innovation becomes popular for a reason. The UV/LED system didn’t become popular simply because it’s something new. It became popular because it solves real challenges that many lash artists face every day.

For some, it’s the constant battle with changing humidity and temperature. For others, it’s achieving better retention. And for many, it’s simply having a more predictable workflow.

Everyone has their own reason.

If you are looking at UV adhesive because of retention, you may also want to read our guide on how to improve lash retention with premade fans.

Even though that blog focuses on premade fans, the same principle applies: retention is rarely about one product alone.

What was mine?

Mine just happened to be an allergy.

And, if I’m being completely honest, a little obsession with being in control.

The allergy made me look for another way, the control made me stay.

Important note:

UV lash adhesives are not automatically allergy-free. Many still contain cyanoacrylate, so anyone with adhesive sensitivities should follow product guidance, patch testing policies where required, and seek professional advice where needed.

Was the switch easy?

Not really. Like every new technique, I had to readjust my movements, my timing and my habits.

At first, it didn’t feel nearly as natural as it does today. I tested different devices, different adhesives, different settings.

I observed, I adjusted and I learned what worked for me.

What do you need to start?

More than just a bottle of UV adhesive.

You’ll need:

  • a professional UV/LED device designed for lash extensions
  • a compatible UV adhesive
  • the correct safety procedures
  • proper education

This article is meant to be an introduction, not a replacement for training.

A good course helped many things finally click for me. And if you decide to explore the UV/LED system seriously, I’d genuinely encourage you to learn it properly.

Because I truly believe there’s a right way and a wrong way to do things.

Safety and training matter

The goal isn’t simply to switch to a different system, but to understand the system you’re working with and use it safely, correctly and confidently.

Before using a UV/LED lash system, make sure you understand:

  • which UV/LED lamp is compatible with your adhesive
  • what wavelength and curing distance your system requires
  • how to protect the client and yourself during application
  • how to position the lamp correctly
  • how to store UV adhesive away from direct light and heat
  • what your product’s professional safety guidance says

Frequently asked questions about UV lash glue

What is UV lash glue?

UV lash glue is a lash adhesive designed to cure when activated by a compatible UV/LED lamp. It is used as part of a UV/LED lash system, not on its own.

Are UV lash extensions actually UV?

No. The extensions themselves are normal eyelash extensions. People may call them UV lash extensions, but technically the system uses a UV/LED lamp and compatible UV lash adhesive to cure the bond during application.

Can I use normal lash glue with a UV/LED lamp?

No. A regular lash adhesive does not become UV adhesive just because it is exposed to a UV/LED lamp. UV adhesives are designed with ingredients that respond to the correct wavelength of light.

Does UV lash glue still contain cyanoacrylate?

Many UV lash adhesives are still based on cyanoacrylate, just like traditional lash adhesives. The difference is that UV adhesives also contain photoinitiators that allow the adhesive to cure when activated by the correct light.

Do humidity and temperature still matter with UV lash glue?

Yes, but differently. The UV/LED lamp controls when curing starts, but your room conditions can still affect the adhesive drop, consistency, pick-up and how comfortable the glue feels to work with.

Is UV lash glue safe?

UV lash glue should only be used by trained lash artists with a compatible UV/LED lash system and correct safety procedures. Always follow the adhesive and lamp manufacturer’s instructions.

Do I need training before using a UV/LED lash system?

Yes. A UV/LED lash system changes your timing, movement, curing method and safety responsibilities. Proper training helps you understand how to use the system safely and confidently.
